It is located in Taraba State, one of the Northeastern state in the country and it share a border with Cameroon, it lies on the edge of Gashaka Gumti Forest Reserve and Gashaka-Gumti National Park on the Mambilla Plateau.
The mountain is also called Chappal called Gangirwal which translates to 'Mountain of Death' in Fulfulde Language which is spoken by the large population in Gashaka and Sardauna Local Government area of Taraba State. According to many people, the reason why it is called the mountain of death or "Gangirwal" is "because of an insurmountable gully that exists in the Southern corner of the Nigerian side of the range"
Chappal Waddi is the highest peak in Nigeria. It has an elevation of 2,419 meters (7,936 ft) and it is situated in Gashaka Gumti National Park, in Taraba state.
