Taraba State Assembly Workers Begin Strike Over Nonpayment Of 7 Years Allowances


Taraba State House of Assembly workers, under the aegis of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), have begun an indefinite strike to demand the payment of their seven years outfit allowances from the state government.

Jeremy Spell Blog quoted Sahara Reporters that PASAN declared the strike today been Monday and disclosed it in a statement jointly signed by its State Chairman, Ibrahim Bala Yusuf, and Secretary, Abdullahi Abubakar.

The Assembly workers lamented that efforts to resolve the issue with the administration of Governor Darius Ishaku and prevent going on strike were futile.

According to them, they had given the leadership of the Assembly seven days to pay the outstanding allowances but that was not done by the expiration of the ultimatum.

The union noted that following the “expiration of the seven-day ultimatum issued to the leadership of this Assembly on issues that border on the outfit allowance of the staff of this Assembly, the leadership of this famous union has no option but to direct members of this union to stay away from work from Monday, the 7th day of November 2022”.

As the union noted, the assembly workers earlier issued a notice giving a seven-day ultimatum to Governor Ishaku to clear their outstanding seven years allowances.

PASAN, Taraba State Secretariat, in a letter dated October 26, 2022, threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if the state government refuses to comply with their demands.

In the letter to the governor, the union explained that the ultimatum followed the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum earlier issued to the leadership of the State House of Assembly which did not yield the desired results.

With the strike, the state government's plan to submit the 2023 budget this week may be hampered if the matter is not resolved before then.
